Night Raid is the covert assassination branch of the Revolutionary Army, an uprising assembled to overthrow Prime Minister Honest, whose avarice and greed for power has led him to take advantage of the child emperor’s inexperience. Without a strong and benevolent leader, the rest of the nation is left to drown in poverty, strife, and ruin. Though the Night Raid members are all experienced killers, they understand that taking lives is far from commendable and that they will likely face retribution as they mercilessly eliminate anyone who stands in the revolution’s way. This merry band of assassins’ newest member is Tatsumi, a naïve boy from a remote village who had embarked on a journey to help his impoverished hometown and was won over by not only Night Raid’s ideals, but also their resolve. Akame ga Kill! follows Tatsumi as he fights the Empire and comes face-to-face with powerful weapons, enemy assassins, challenges to his own morals and values, and ultimately, what it truly means to be an assassin with a cause.
Oh gosh, this anime just pisses me off, you can read more about how later. Now let‘s talk about why would you want to watch this anime in the first place. There‘s actually quite a few reasons, the story works fine until the point where it starts to differ from the manga drasticly. (Which is really late in the anime.) The protagonist, Tatsume, is easy to relate to and the plot is.. Well.. Kind of unpredictable.

WARNING: The Following part will contain spoilers from the manga and from the anime
Episodes 1-19 are the adaptation of volume 1-8 in the manga and episodes 20-24 are the ‚adaptations‘ of volume 9-15. The anime tries to be brutal, and it is but not as brutal as the manga, which places it in a weird position. Just by these two facts, we can already see some problems, but let‘s not focus on this for now.
This paragraph gives context to how things start out, if you are not interested skip it to the next one. The anime‘s protagonist is Tatsume, who is from a small, poor village. He and his friend’s goal were to go to the capitol, join the army and earn money for their hometown. On the way there Tatsume lost his friends, hoping that he would meet them there. When he arrived in the capitol, he was pretty much immediately scummed and lost all his money, a young, cute girl offered him a place to sleep because she was so „nice“ for no reason. It turned out she wasn‘t that „nice“ at all, as she and her family were tortured humans just for fun, pretty normal huh? Due to the, khm, excellent plot Tatsumi‘s friends were tortured and killed by this family too. An assassin unit called „Night Raid“ was after this family, when Tatsume saw what this family done to his friend, he killed the last one before the assassin unit could. (or they just let him do it because in this way they don‘t have to do anything) I guess because of this, the assassin unit decided he could be a new member of the group. So they offered him a choice, he could join the team or he could be a slave at a mine. (what a hard decision)
This part was done because the author somehow had to illustrate tphat how cruel the capitol is and that Tatsumi is willing to kill for the greater good. Killing on its own isn‘t a problem, but it is a start to a scheme which is a problem. The author constantly tells us the backstory for each character just because they die, and this is a problem even in the manga, but due to mediocre adaptation it is way worse in the anime. This is bad because it kills all the side/main characters in exchange for some minor character development and okay, I would even say let‘s do it, I don‘t like it, but if you can execute the idea correctly, then do it, and the manga does it quite well by constantly showing memories of Tatsume with the ones who died and not just like flashing pictures of them, but by introducing conversations and stories that we haven‘t heard/known before.
Now, what happens after episode 19? At the time the manga wasn‘t finished, so they had to write something. (I guess they couldn‘t wait one more year for the author to publish the manga and finish it properly) The writer who finished the anime just blew my fuckin’ mind away. Just how incompetent you must be to finish it this way, I can even imagine that he was told to to finish it this badly so the public would buy the manga. In any case it is a disaster, if you, haven‘t I would suggest to you to read the manga from volume 9 till the en. What this guy could mess up, he did mess up and I‘m not joking. Mine and Tatsumi‘s relationship is pretty much non existent in the anime, but still they love each other. Kurome and the blue haired guy‘s relationship are messed up as well. Same with Akame and Kurome and I haven‘t mentioned yet that the manga doesn‘t kill every single fuckin’ character who‘s left.
